“Mama Zooms” by Jane Cowen-Fletcher,1993. Scholastic. Picture Book. Ages 3-6.
Written from the point of view of a child, the narrator tells about the many things that he does together with his mother, who is wheelchair-bound. The day begins with Daddy putting the little boy in his mother’s lap. In her wheelchair, “mama zooms” him around the neighbourhood- across the lawn, through puddles on rainy days, sidewalks, down ramps, bumpy roads and across bridges. She becomes his airplane, race car, wagon and a million other wonderful things. At the close of day, “mama zooms” to bed, and it is this moment he loves best, when mama is just plain mama.
The mother’s courage, optimism and love shine through the prose and pictures. Her disability is portrayed as an opportunity to be the many, many different things that she can be for her child.
