Look, listen and be merry!

I can’t overestimate the importance of observation in learning science. Observing is more than just looking. You can help your child to become a good observer by using your senses when exploring the world around you: Look, feel, touch, listen, smell and taste ( if possible) .

When Joy and I go for walks, we take the time to drink in the surroundings. We listen to birdcalls, watch pigeons carry bits of grass, climb trees ( Joy), throw pebbles into puddles after the rain and dig into soil with dry twigs or branches. Leaf collecting and tree-bark rubbings punctuate evening walks. Occasionally, night-time ‘treasure hunts’ for frogs and snails define after-dinner entertainment.
There is so much of our world to wonder at.

Then there is the observation of changes happening. Changes happening within herself , changes in the season or weather, changes in pets and plants. A good way of recording change would be to provide your child with a nature notebook where she draws what she observes. Or she could collect samples and have it attached to a folder.
