” I Want to Be” by Tony Ross, 1993. Collins Picture Lions. Picture Book. Ages 3-6.
This is one of several books about the misadventures of a feisty little princess. In this book, she decides that she wants to grow up. “I wonder how I should do it?”she muses. She seeks the advice of the hapless adults in her palace – the king and queen, the cook, the prime minister, the doctor, the admiral and the maid. These adults dish out all sorts of ideas -be clean, be brave, be loving, be kind. Yet, their very behaviour contradict their advice: the general whoimplores her to be brave is terrfied of mice, the cook who tells her to be clean cooks stew with mice dangling on the sausages and his finger in his nose. She does find the answer in the end, though not from those she had expected.
Tony Ross makes the pictures and words do little dances round the reader. Both my kids absolutely love these books and find them hilarious. I used this one to talk about growing up .His other books that we have read are ” I want my potty” and ” The Knight Who was Afraid of The Dark”.
