The Lazy Bear by Brian Wildsmith, 1973. Oxford University Press. Picture Book.Ages 3-6.
This cautionary tale begins with a bear discovering a wagon on top of a hill. Having never seen one before, he sniffs, walks around it and finally decides to sit in it. The wagon rolls down the slope with the surprised bear in it. The bear enjoys the ride. In fact, he enjoys it so much that he pushes the wagon up the hill and rides down the slope again and again. However the lazy creature dislikes having to push the wagon uphill every time so he tricks the forest animals into pushing him up the slope. The task as you can imagine, is no joke. After pushing the lazy bear uphill for the hundredth time, the forest animals hatch a plan to teach their friend a lesson.
The illustrations are spread across the pages – a feast of colours and textures. This is also a wonderful book that can be used for group read-aloud sessions.
